Is nutrition counseling really a necessity?
Q. Dear Lory, RD
Is nutrition counseling really a necessity? I am not obese, and the only bad habit I have (smoking) I am trying to cut out.
Jennifer
Las Vegas, NV
A. Dear Jennifer,
I do not have your chart in front of me, so I am not privy to why you are seeking fertility assistance to begin with, but current research indicates that nutrition status, either female and/or male can have a huge impact on fertility. We used to look only at what the female ate and its affect on egg quality, quantity and the entire fertility cycle. Now we are also concentrating on what the male eats and how it affects the quality and quantity of sperm.
How much of a part nutrition plays can be debated, but it is the least expensive form of fertility treatment, and it is the one aspect of your care that you have the most control over.
Some of the risk factors I look for on the chart (both partners) are a family or patient history of heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, metabolic syndrome, smoking, alcohol and obesity.
I hope this answers your question,
Sincerely,
Lory, RD
