As the city’s first reproductive specialist, Dr. Bruce Shapiro, has been growing Las Vegas one baby at a time to the tune of over 2,400 births.

First recruited to establish the division of reproductive endocrinology for the University of Nevada School of Medicine Dr. Shapiro concurrently founded the city’s first infertility practice, The Fertility Center of Las Vegas. Nearly twenty years later the Center has earned the worldwide respect of colleagues and the effusive gratitude of patients.

After completing his fellowship training in reproductive medicine at Yale University, Shapiro, sub-specialty board certified in reproductive endocrinology and infertility, became established as the city’s first fertility specialist. As a result Dr. Shapiro achieved the first in-vitro fertilization (IVF) pregnancy, commonly known as a “test-tube” baby in Las Vegas.

A dedicated clinician and researcher, Dr. Shapiro is a high-complexity laboratory director (HCLD) and inspector for the College of American Pathologists. He has presented and has had papers published in esteemed medical journals including Obstetrics and Gynecology and Human Reproduction. Dr. Shapiro helped develop blastocyst transfer a revolutionary technique used in conjunction with in-vitro fertilization (IVF) that increases pregnancy success rates while reducing multiples so that mother and baby are healthier. In addition he has participated in the development of proprietary cell mediums used for high-tech infertility procedures, and has served as a media expert on these topics.

Under his direction The Fertility Center of Las Vegas has grown from a modest two-person facility to having a regional presence boasting two locations and over 30 professional staff from embryologists to statisticians from its Summerlin based state-of-the-art, nationally accredited laboratory. Dr. Shapiro remains on faculty as head of the Division of Reproductive Medicine for the University of Nevada School of Medicine where he teaches medical students and residents. He and his partner, Dr. Said Daneshmand, and The Fertility Center’s patients are ardent community supporters and have donated over $40,000 to various non-profit groups including St. Judes, Child Haven, and SAFE KIDS.

In his free time, Dr. Shapiro enjoys traveling with this family, and is an amateur meteorologist who is quite adept at predicting what Mother Nature will do next. Then again, is that any surprise?!
