PCOS and Heart Health
Regardless if you are thin or not, women with PCOS have a higher rate of cardiovascular risk factors. These risks include elevated triglyceride levels (the blood storage form of fat), elevated blood pressure, increased  levels of total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol (the so-called “bad” type of cholesterol), and low levels of HDL (the “good” type of cholesterol that we should have high levels of). Studies show that as many as 70% of all women with PCOS have elevated levels of LDL cholesterol and low levels of HDL both of which are strong predictors of cardiovascular disease. Whether you have abnormal cholesterol levels or not, now is the time to take measures to improve your heart and your health. Meeting with a registered dietitian will give you the tools necessary to improve your quality of life and lessen your risk for heart disease.

PCOS and Strong Carbohydrate Cravings

Excerpt from Martha McKittrick, RD, CDE

You are trying to follow a strict low carb diet, but all you can think about is bread. Why does eating one cookie set off an incredible urge to finish the entire bag? You're feeling very stressed out — the candy bar in the vending machine is calling your name.

Sound familiar? Food cravings are normal and are experienced by most people at one time or another. However, many women with PCOS experience carbohydrate cravings on a daily basis. Why do women with PCOS experience frequent carb cravings and is there anything that can be done about it?

There are many possible reasons for food cravings. Let’s start by looking at a woman with PCOS. Since the average woman with PCOS is struggling with her weight, she is probably on a restrictive diet. Chances are she has heard that carbs are "bad" and is therefore limiting carbohydrates as much as possible. In addition, she has the added curse of insulin resistance, which seems to make her hungrier — especially for carbs. And lastly, she feels very anxious and stressed out about various issues, including her PCOS condition.

Intense carbohydrate cravings therefore are most likely due to strict or inconsistent dieting/bingeing, minimal intake of carbs, as well as the insulin resistance and stress.

Meeting with a registered dietitian, who is familiar with the cycle of PCOS, both the physical as well as the mental stress, will bring about piece of mind that the syndrome can be controllable with some lifestyle changes, and a dietitian can help you reach your future goals, whatever they may be.

Diagnosing PCOS

Many women struggle everyday with the signs and symptoms of PCOS. Why have they not been diagnosed by their healthcare team? Why is there not a universal suggested treatment?

Here is a short 3 part video that originally aired on DISCOVERY HEALTH. The woman depicted here (Ashley Tabeling), went on to establish PROJECTPCOS (www.projectpcos.org)
