PCOS and HEART HEALTH
Regardless if you are thin or not, women with PCOS have a higher rate of cardiovascular risk factors. These risks include elevated triglyceride levels (the blood storage form of fat), elevated blood pressure, increased levels of total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol (the so-called “bad” type of cholesterol), and low levels of HDL (the “good” type of cholesterol that we should have high levels of). Studies show that as many as 70% of all women with PCOS have elevated levels of LDL cholesterol and low levels of HDL both of which are strong predictors of cardiovascular disease. Whether you have abnormal cholesterol levels or not, now is the time to take measures to improve your heart and your health. Meeting with a registered dietitian will give you the tools necessary to improve your quality of life and lessen your risk for heart disease.
PCOS and STRONG CARBOHYDRATE CRAVINGS
Excerpt from Martha McKittrick, RD, CDE
You are trying to follow a strict low carb diet, but all you can think about is bread. Why does eating one cookie set off an incredible urge to finish the entire bag? You're feeling very stressed out — the candy bar in the vending machine is calling your name.
Sound familiar? Food cravings are normal and are experienced by most people at one time or another. However, many women with PCOS experience carbohydrate cravings on a daily basis. Why do women with PCOS experience frequent carb cravings and is there anything that can be done about it?
There are many possible reasons for food cravings. Let’s start by looking at a woman with PCOS. Since the average woman with PCOS is struggling with her weight, she is probably on a restrictive diet. Chances are she has heard that carbs are "bad" and is therefore limiting carbohydrates as much as possible. In addition, she has the added curse of insulin resistance, which seems to make her hungrier — especially for carbs. And lastly, she feels very anxious and stressed out about various issues, including her PCOS condition.
Intense carbohydrate cravings therefore are most likely due to strict or inconsistent dieting/bingeing, minimal intake of carbs, as well as the insulin resistance and stress.
Meeting with a registered dietitian, who is familiar with the cycle of PCOS, both the physical as well as the mental stress, will bring about piece of mind that the syndrome can be controllable with some lifestyle changes, and a dietitian can help you reach your future goals, whatever they may be.
DO I HAVE PCOS? WHAT ARE THE SIGNS? WHY IS THE DIAGNOSIS OFTEN MISSED?
Many women struggle everyday with the signs and symptoms of PCOS. Why have they not been diagnosed by their healthcare team? Why is there not a universal suggested treatment?
Here is a short 3 part video that originally aired on DISCOVERY HEALTH. The woman depicted here (Ashley Tabeling), went on to establish PROJECTPCOS (www.projectpcos.org)

PRESERVING YOUR FERTILITY IN THESE TROUBLED FINANCIAL TIMES
For those readers who have not met me, I am Lory Hayon, B.S., R.D., Registered Dietitian and Medical Nutritionist for the Fertility Center of Las Vegas. You may have received calls or voicemails from me recently, offering to assist you in scheduling your nutritional consultation. The nutritional consultation is a mandatory part of the medical screening for all patients at the Fertility Center of Las Vegas.
You may not know this, but lifestyle changes such as improving nutritional habits and increasing activity level are the number one treatment for controlling insulin resistance and improving PCOS symptoms. At the present time, there is no cure for PCOS, but it is possible to decrease the negative outcomes of the syndrome and increase your chances of conception with or without fertility treatments if pregnancy is your ultimate goal.
It has been really challenging filling the spots in our workshops and consultations this year, primarily because of the weakening economy. Many households have lost their primary source of income. I understand what a burden this places on you, and how things that may seem frivolous might be placed on the back burner, but optimal health and preservation of fertility should not be something you need to postpone. We have created our PCOS workshop in an effort to assist the PCOS community in having an affordable option to individual counseling, while providing the same lesson plan at half the price.
Some women with PCOS believe it affects only their ability to have children. Therefore if they need to put off becoming pregnant, they in turn put off the treatment of PCOS as well. This is a dangerous misconception. Neglecting your health and not addressing PCOS can also cause serious life threatening complications. Women with PCOS have a higher risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, liver disease, and endometrial cancer. There is also evidence that suggests not controlling insulin resistance, usually associated with PCOS, places women at higher risk for breast cancer.
Having outlined these risks, and taken into consideration current finances, I STRONGLY suggest that you make a point of attending one of our monthly PCOS Workshops. This workshop will count as the nutritional consultation required by the Fertility Center, and will also get you on the right track to reducing your risk of serious health complications, while protecting your fertility.
This workshop is free but does require advanced reservations. Please call 702 254-1777 to reserve your spot.
The workshop is open to all women in the community who have PCOS.
