A: According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, being overweight or obese may reduce a woman’s fertility
Fertility Issues with obesity:
- Irregular or infrequent menstrual cycles
- Increased risk of infertility
- Increased risk during fertility surgery
- Increased risk of miscarriage
- Decreased success with fertility treatments
If pregnancy is achieved, excessive weight increases risks associated with pregnancy
Potential pregnancy complications with obesity:
- Increased risk of high blood pressure
- Increased risk of diabetes in pregnancy
- Increased risk of birth defects
- Increased risk of high-birth weight infant
- Increased risk of Cesarean section

Q: How am I screened for participation in Weigh to Conceive program?
A: A chart review is completed by the Fertility Center of Las Vegas Registered Dietitian. This occurs once initial lab work and physical exam is completed. The following is assessed:
- Weight for Height (Body Mass Index)
- Nutrition related blood work including fasting glucose, fasting insulin, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, Triglycerides
- Blood pressure
- Medical History of patient and immediate family
- Current medication and lifestyle habits
Bottom Line: If it is determined that a patient meets the Weigh to Conceive criteria, a referral from the Fertility Center of Las Vegas Registered Dietitian will be written. The Fertility Center of Las Vegas Registered Dietitian will call and or email the patient for an appointment.
Q: How does the Weigh to Conceive Program differ from other weight loss programs available such as Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig?
A: Most weight loss programs are designed to show quick results without consideration given to the nutritional needs of women in their childbearing years. This may set women up for malnutrition pre-pregnancy.
Weigh to Conceive program was designed by the Fertility of Las Vegas medical and nutritional staff, who is knowledgeable regarding the specific nutrients that are crucial to pregnancy and proper fetal development.
Bottom Line: Continuity of Care means that the Registered Dietitian that begins care to help with weight management pre-conception, will be the same dietitian that will be there to answer questions regarding pregnancy and breast feeding nutrition.
Q: What kind of time commitment is the Weigh to Conceive program?
A: The Weigh to Conceive ãProgram is a 12- Month Program that consists of the following:
- Initial One Hour Consultation/ Assessment
- Twice Monthly Private 30- Minute Weigh to Conceive ã Education and Wellness Sessions with the Fertility Center of Las Vegas Registered Dietitian
- Once Per Week “Check-In” Email from the Fertility of Las Vegas Registered Dietitian, highlighting the coming week’s goals.
